Forest Campaigner

Richard joined Stand in February 2023 as a Forest Campaigner. His campaigns focus on the Canadian wood pellet export sector and logging companies that are accelerating climate change and impacting primary and old growth forests, communities, and key species in Canada and the U.S.  He has been a driving force in market based initiatives promoting responsible forest management, social justice and environmental protection for over 30 years. He has a talent for facilitating consensus based processes and managing partnerships between governments, environmental advocates, Indigenous peoples and corporations. Through the development of forest stewardship standards, he has empowered Indigenous communities to include the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and environmental organizations to identify and safeguard High Conservation Values from Canada and the US to Asia Pacific, Russia, China, Europe and the Congo Basin.  Richard is expert in international forestry practices, forest certification, and illegality in the timber trade.  He has also brokered agreement on international water stewardship standards, improving industry practices, and securing communities rights to water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Richard lives and works on the unceded territories of the shíshálh nation on the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia, with his wife, Angeline, and young family.  He’s an avid foodie and enjoys foraging and exploring the forests and rich marine environments in British Columbia.
