Matthew Carroll
Matthew is the Senior IT Manager at Stand.Earth. He has over 20 years experience in the nonprofit world as an environmentalist, scientist, and campaign strategist, and is passionate about using technology as a tool to build power and bring people together to create a better world. Matthew’s experience has ranged from working with non-profit organizations in the UK and Canada, to the BC Provincial Government, and international climate and sustainability advocacy through the U.N. In 2011 he co-founded Leadnow.ca, and has worked as Campaigns Director for OpenMedia.org and interim Executive Director at Neighbours United (formerly the West Kootenay EcoSociety).
Matthew started tinkering with computers at an early age, taught himself to code, and then programmed his ZX Spectrum 128k to play his mom happy birthday in three-part harmony. In 2021 he decided to focus on technology full time, and prior to returning to the nonprofit world and joining Stand in 2024 he worked as a software developer at WithYouWithMe, building digital tools to support training and mentorship within the Canadian Forces. Matthew holds a masters degree in atmospheric chemistry from University of Leeds and University of Toronto, and a certificate in Software Development from Selkirk College.
Matthew lives in Nelson, BC, on the traditional territories of the Sinixt, Ktunaxa and Secwe̓pemc peoples, and in his spare time loves to explore the mountains, make music, tinker with amateur radio, and run around on an ultimate frisbee field chasing flying plastic discs, sometimes wearing rather silly costumes.
