Leather: How We Connected High Fashion and Amazon Clear-Cutting

The Brazilian cattle industry is the main driver of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. The industry is driven by demand for beef and leather. Brazilian leather is used by tanneries and manufacturers around the world to make countless branded consumer-facing products including footwear and high-end fashion products.

The Stand.earth Research Group revealed the extent to which high fashion and luxury leather goods industry, including some global brands who pride themselves on being green, are implicit in supporting “tainted leather,” because they source leather which is a by-product of the frequently illegal cattle ranching driving the Amazon’s deforestation.
