Challenging the Big LNG Lie

There is a new, dangerous lie being pushed by fossil fuel executives. Wrapped in shiny marketing, bankrolled by reckless banks, and wreaking havoc on communities around the world, liquified “natural” gas (LNG) is being peddled as a climate solution, when it is anything but.

Right now, fossil fuel giants are pouring billions into building new liquefied “natural” gas (LNG) terminals on coastlines around the world—including along the pristine shores of British Columbia and the southern coast of the United States. These aren’t just bad investments; they’re carbon bombs in disguise.

But here is the catch. These mega-projects can’t move forward without financing. And a small group of powerful banks holds the purse strings. If we can convince them to stop bankrolling LNG, we can slow the industry down before it locks in decades of more pollution.

Will you add your name to the petition calling on global banks to stop funding the dangerous LNG boom?

LNG is a climate pollutant 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. It’s really just fracked gas, and the entire process, from extraction to export, poisons our air and water, leading to a host of health problems for our communities.

The industry’s newest dirty trick is pushing LNG as a “cleaner” shipping fuel. They’re building new ships and fuelling ports, locking us into decades of dangerous, leaky infrastructure when we should be investing in real, clean energy solutions.

But to keep up this reckless growth, LNG companies need banks to give them loans, help sell their bonds to investors, and to bolster their reputations. Bonds (like an IOU) are where half of the fossil fuel industry’s financing comes from. Banks have been playing a crucial role by helping dirty gas companies sell their toxic bonds to investors.

But if enough of us speak out, we can shift this financial tide, just like we did when seven major banks stopped funding oil and gas expansion in the Amazon.

This fight stretches across all of North America and beyond. From the communities in the U.S. Gulf South facing disproportionate health impacts to the First Nations in British Columbia upholding their right to deny fracking within their territories, our struggle is linked. Together, we can show these banks that their bet on fossil fuels is a losing one.

Take action to hold reckless banks accountable, and join a rising wave of opposition to unchecked global LNG expansion.

We’ve been doing the impossible for decades. We’ve gone up against billion-dollar corporations and governments and won. Our community has played a crucial role in the divestment movement, helping to pull more than $40 trillion from fossil fuel company coffers.

We’ve also helped dozens of cities fast-track clean energy policies and have shifted corporate powerhouses like Levi’s, Starbucks, and Staples toward more sustainable paths. We know that when we stand together, we can make change happen—and this time is no different.
