The Achilles Heel: Methane Leakage
LNG poses environmental risks at every stage of its production and use. From the extraction of “natural gas” to its transformation into LNG and transportation, methane leakage and other harmful emissions occur. It is crucial to recognize that LNG is not environmentally friendly at any point in its lifecycle. This leaking undermines the supposed “climate advantages” of using LNG.

Fracking and Environmental Degradation
During the fracking process, a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals is injected deep underground at high pressure to fracture rock formations and release methane. This mixture, known as fracking fluid, contains various toxic chemicals, making water contamination a major concern.
Wastewater from the fracking process contains this same mixture of chemicals, heavy metals, and radioactive materials that contaminate surface water and soil if not properly managed. Surface spills, leaks from storage ponds, or inadequate treatment facilities pose a significant risk to water quality.

Water contamination means serious consequences for human health and the environment. Contaminated drinking water poses risks to public health, leading to exposure to toxic chemicals and increased rates of deadly illnesses. Polluted water sources also harm aquatic ecosystems, affecting fish and wildlife populations and disrupting ecosystem functions.
Fracking brings significant habitat destruction. When companies set up drilling sites, they carve out large areas of land for drilling pads, roads to access them, and pipelines to transport the gas. These activities disrupt natural landscapes, clearing forests, flattening hills, and altering the terrain. This destruction fragments habitats, breaking up once-continuous ecosystems into smaller, isolated patches. Ultimately, the habitat destruction caused by fracking poses a significant threat to biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
Energy-Intensive Production
The process of turning natural gas into the actual liquid called “LNG” uses a lot of energy. This process involves cooling the gas to extremely low temperatures, which demands a substantial amount of electricity. This electricity comes mostly from fossil fuel-based sources, creating more carbon emissions, adding to pollution. Overall, the energy-intensive nature of LNG production contributes to environmental degradation and undermines sustainability efforts.

Lock-In Effect and Delayed Transition
Investing in LNG infrastructure, like building liquefaction plants and export terminals, means putting a lot of money into the natural gas industry. This investment makes it more likely that we’ll keep using natural gas as a major energy source for a long time. But while we’re focusing on natural gas, we may not be putting as much effort into developing renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. This delay in transitioning to cleaner energy options will slow down our progress towards sustainability goals, like reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change, which rely on moving away from fossil fuels like natural gas.
Although LNG might seem like a helpful alternative fuel for now, it needs careful examination.
