We Won’t Back Down For People or the Planet
January 20, 2025

Today might be inauguration day, but we’re gearing up for the fight ahead
Today is Donald Trump’s inauguration — and we know that many of us are scared. Right now, in the United States, we face a stark reality: the election of a president whose actions and rhetoric endanger the values we hold dear – justice, equity, and a safe and thriving planet for all.
The ripple effects of Trump’s election are felt far beyond U.S. borders. We have seen the emboldenment of the far right, and how communities across North America and the globe are already impacted by the climate crisis. The dangers of a Trump presidency are real, and if you’re feeling devastated or afraid, please know that you’re not alone. From denying climate science to threatening migrants and communities of color, this administration has made its priorities obvious. But we want to be clear, we won’t stand idly by as Trump and his cronies attack communities and the planet we hold dear.
The stakes are high. Communities are already experiencing the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, from Los Angeles to Asheville to Jasper. Families are grappling with polluted air and water. Indigenous lands and nations are under threat. And those most vulnerable – communities of color, poor and working class communities, queer and trans communities, disabled communities – all stand to bear the heaviest burden.
That’s why our work together is more important than ever. This moment calls for courage and collective action. It calls for unwavering solidarity with the people and places most at risk – both here at home in North America and around the world. One truth has become crystal clear: When everything else falls apart, community comes together. When institutions falter, people are the ones who care for and protect each other.
Nothing embodies that more than the Stand.earth community’s commitment to people and the planet. Together, we can (and will!) resist harmful policies, advocate for bold solutions, and fight for the climate-safe future we all deserve – a future that puts people and the planet first.
Over the coming weeks and months, our work at Stand will be guided by our shared commitment to justice. From fighting new fossil fuel projects, to pushing to electrify our economy, to rising in solidarity with frontline communities from the Wet’suwet’en yintah to Amazonia – we will be relentless. As we brace for the challenges ahead, we know 2025 won’t just bring opportunities for action in the U.S. — it’s also a pivotal time for Canada, with a federal election on the horizon. The stakes couldn’t be higher for climate action and justice on both sides of the border. Together, we have the power to ensure that people and the planet remain at the forefront of the decisions that shape our future.
Many things about the coming months are uncertain, but here’s what we know for sure: We are stronger together. The challenges of the next four years may be daunting, but the power of the Stand.earth community of 1 million strong is unstoppable. We’ve worked to protect millions of acres of forests from extractive industries. We’ve gone up against multinational oil, gas, and coal companies worth billions of dollars and come out victorious, blocking dozens of their projects that would have poisoned local communities and accelerated the climate crisis. We’ve shifted billions of dollars of purchasing from corporate powerhouses like Starbucks, Staples, and Levi’s onto sustainable pathways.
As we hold each other in the coming days, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of this fight, and part of our movement.
Together we are stronger. Together we are unstoppable.
