July 2024 newsletter: Scheming and dreaming for a fossil-free future

July 28, 2024

As we move through the year’s longest days in the midst of another summer of extreme heat and intense wildfires, the impacts of our changing climate have never been more clear.

From publishing cutting-edge research that influences global decision makers to fortifying our international network of climate advocates, Stand.earth continues to creatively blend advocacy, accountability and action to interrupt the systems that endanger our planet and its people.

We hope this newsletter will offer a snapshot of our recent efforts, and inspire hope in the future we’re building together. Thanks for being here.

New Research: Major Amazon Oil and Gas Financiers Fail to Protect the Rainforest

Last month, our tropical forests program released a new report that demonstrates the ways in which major banks are investing in destruction that is irreversible for one of the most strategic ecosystems for life on the planet, even as they are falsely claiming to protect the Amazon rainforest, Indigenous rights, and our climate.

Tip of the month

If you currently have a gas stove and are worried about the harm it could be causing you and your family, make sure to run the overhead fan and/or open windows while cooking to increase ventilation and lower pollution risks.

It’s time to tell RBC ‘We Are Never Ever Ever Ever Getting Back Together’

In partnership with Change Course and Decolonial Solidarity, Stand.earth launched an exciting new contest earlier this summer called Unite the Swifties!

The Royal Bank of Canada is Canada’s largest fossil fuel funder, and the primary sponsor of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Canada. We’re calling on Taylor Swift fans to raise their voices, and SPEAK NOW about RBC’s fossil fuel financing and violation of Indigenous rights for a chance to win tickets to Taylor Swift’s concert in Toronto or Vancouver!

This is just one example of the creative campaigning that Stand initiates every day, all aimed at ensuring accountability through people power.

Scheming and dreaming for a fossil-free future

Activists, organizers, and changemakers from across British Columbia gathered in early June to build movement power against fracking.

The event was hosted by Frack Free BC, a broad-based alliance of NGOs, Indigenous partners, grassroots organizations, community groups, and individuals calling for an end to fracking in the province and working together to hold the British Columbia government accountable for the province’s biggest climate problem.

Frack Free BC is coordinated by Stand.earth in partnership with Dogwood and Wilderness Committee.

Stand up to Wall Street in the Summer of Heat

Partners with the Summer of Heat campaign, including Stand.earth, are ramping up pressure on Wall Street with continuous civil disobedience at the doors of the biggest funders of coal, oil, and gas.

We are demanding an end to financing of fossil fuels and weapons, and connecting the dots on Citi’s corporate colonialism around the world.

Making headlines from The New York Times to Bloomberg, Summer of Heat is spotlighting Citibank as the world’s largest financier of fossil fuel expansion. Over 300 people have been arrested to date, including elders, scientists, faith leaders, youth, and more.

In June, Summer of Heat had its largest action, Gulf South Rising, where 200+ community organizers and frontline leaders from the Gulf South ― home to the world’s largest buildout of new fossil fuel projects ― convened in New York for a march and action.

Overheard in the news

“With climate change and biodiversity loss looming over us, we need banks making better decisions for the sake of their clients and their own business interests. This is a reckoning here and a call to responsibility.”
