October 2025 newsletter: Putting mission above recognition

October 18, 2025

The final months of the year are always a dynamic time at Stand.earth, punctuated by our participation in numerous events of global influence and our publication of numerous new reports and research to inform our policy and advocacy efforts in those spaces.

As our staff reflected on their takeaways from Climate Week NYC late last month (more on that below!), one of the consistent highlights was witnessing how our presence there is a culmination of the months and years of groundwork we’ve laid to build durable relationships, deep trust, and collective power that effect lasting change.

We know advocacy is more successful when we work together. That’s why we collaborate with a wide variety of partners, including local organizing and environmental justice groups; national organizations within and beyond the environmental movement; and networks of governments, legal experts, and frontline communities.

Putting mission above recognition, we work in close partnership with our allies to stand up to government policies and corporate agendas that threaten land, health, and life. In both our daily work and at annual convenings, from hyperlocal organizing to international coordination, spanning the grassroots to the grasstops, we focus our efforts on building unparalleled power that can not only shift the conversation, but also change the world.

Thank you for the critical role you play as a valued member of our network of changemakers.

Stand powers on through advocacy events during Climate Week NYC 2025

Stand joined other global leaders in the movement for climate progress at the annual Climate Week NYC gathering that took place in late September.

Numerous of our team members were on the ground in New York City to participate in crucial conversations about the challenges and opportunities ahead over the course of the weeklong convening.

Through the four events we hosted, our team members were energized at the opportunity to share our vision for a climate-safe, equitable future, where environmental and climate justice policies uphold the dignity of people everywhere — at the scale our world requires.

Challenging the Big LNG Lie

There is a new, dangerous lie being pushed by fossil fuel executives. Wrapped in shiny marketing, bankrolled by reckless banks, and wreaking havoc on communities around the world, liquified “natural” gas (LNG) is being peddled as a climate solution, when it is anything but.

Right now, fossil fuel giants are pouring billions into building new LNG terminals on coastlines around the world—including along the pristine shores of British Columbia and the southern coast of the United States. These aren’t just bad investments; they’re carbon bombs in disguise.

A small group of powerful banks holds the purse strings, and if we can convince them to stop bankrolling LNG, we can slow the industry down before it locks in decades of more pollution.

Uplifting update

Global solar and wind power generation have eclipsed that of electricity demand this year, while renewable energies combined have created more power than goal for the first time ever.

Documented in a report published earlier this month, these encouraging trends affirm that a just transition off polluting sources of power is entirely possible when paired with policy and advocacy that support a rapid scale-up of investments in clean energy.

New report reveals oil and gas companies’ record-setting freshwater extraction amid severe drought

Oil and gas companies extracted more than nine billion litres of freshwater from lakes and rivers in British Columbia, representing a record-breaking 50% increase over the year before, according to a report Stand released earlier this month.

Stand’s findings were the focus of an article in The Tyee, which contextualizes the impact of these practices within a region grappling with widespread wildfires, drought, and residential water restrictions.

The report outlined four specific policy recommendations aimed at increasing transparency and reducing freshwater use by the oil and gas sector, as well as identified pathways for the public to show support for an end to these polluting practices.

Indigenous and environmental groups partner to call for climate action by B.C. government

When British Columbia’s government marked the start of its fall legislative session earlier this month, our team was there alongside partners – and a 17-foot-tall inflatable Premier David Eby – to call on leaders to recommit to strong climate action.

“While families are struggling to breathe through wildfire smoke and to keep up with rent and groceries, this government is handing billions to fossil fuel corporations,” Stand Senior Oil and Gas Campaigner Kiki Wood said. “It’s time to stop bankrolling polluters and start investing in people — in affordable housing, renewable energy, healthcare, and a thriving future.”

Voices unite to demand change

Overheard in the news

“We need unprecedented and immediate actions to hold polluters accountable. It is completely reasonable for a jurisdiction that includes communities recently devastated by climate catastrophes to use taxes to prevent further pollution. They deserve financial compensation from those who insist on operating as if the world is not on fire.”
