September 2024 newsletter: Gearing up for global climate action

September 22, 2024

This weekend marks the start of the annual Climate Week NYC gathering, and with it, launches a season of major events and many report releases in Stand.earth’s final stretch toward the end of the year.

Stand will be sending a delegation to represent the people and places we love at three high-profile global gatherings in the coming months — including Climate Week in New York City this week; the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) in Cali, Colombia next month; and the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan in November.

Engaging in these types of annual or biannual convenings is merely one channel through which we work to deliver large-scale change for the health and wellbeing of our planet. In these spaces, we apply the same tried-and-true formula that we leverage across our work year-round.

When you pair our team’s whip-smart analysts and tough-but-fair negotiators with the determined leadership of frontline partners and the inspired voices of millions of advocates around the world, we know that real change is not only possible, but inevitable. Thanks for your voice and presence in our work.

Amazon’s U.S. transportation pollution surges following its commitment to rein in emissions

This month marks five years since Amazon announced its “Climate Pledge” initiative to reduce emissions, and a new joint investigation by Stand.earth Research Group, the Clean Mobility Collective, and the Ship It Zero campaign reveals Amazon’s greenhouse gas emissions have dramatically increased since the company made that commitment.

The publication of this new Prime Polluter report comes two months after Stand and partners shut down the streets in front of Amazon.com’s Seattle HQ on Prime Day to tell the company that it’s going the wrong way on climate and community.

We’ve offered company executives the opportunity to come to the table and talk about ways to solve their pollution problem – by committing to zero-emission deliveries by 2030. So far, crickets. We aren’t letting up. Stay tuned for next steps.

☀️ Uplifting update! ☀️

The European Union reached an inspiring tipping point as it generated more electricity from solar and wind than from fossil fuels in the first half of this year, according to a recent report.

Fracking demands record quantities of freshwater in a time of severe drought

Oil and gas companies in B.C. took a record six billion liters of freshwater for their fracking operations last year, according to data that Stand.earth has been tracking from the British Columbia Energy Regulator. This represents an increase of over 800 million liters — enough to supply every B.C. household for a week — while droughts are intensifying.

This is why our Frack Free BC campaign is calling on the provincial government to reduce the amount of water that fracking companies use by making common-sense changes to the way they regulate the fossil fuel industry. This starts with charging fracking companies a price for water high enough to encourage the conservation of freshwater, and requiring them to treat the toxic waste water they produce.

Walking the divestment talk

Stand.earth is pleased to announce our U.S. retirement funds are now fossil free, after working closely with Carbon Collective to offer employees a path to invest in a way that aligns with our shared values.

Organizational partners including The Climate Center, Green America, Ecojustice and GreenFaith have also officially joined the Global Divestment Database. Stand calls on fellow climate organizations to announce their divestment from fossil fuels, and join the global total of over 1,630 institutions and over $40.76 trillion in assets.

Overheard in the news

“We need to take chances; we’re in an emergency, we need to act like it. The amazing thing right now is that so much more is possible with these kinds of strategies and these kinds of campaigns, and that’s lucky for us because so much more is required.”
