Advisory: COP26 webinar to reveal new research showing Amazon rainforest at the tipping point

November 2, 2021

Researchers, Indigenous leaders to provide insight on what can be done to achieve 80% protection by 2025

WHAT: New scientific evidence recently released by a team of experts from the Geo-referenced Socio-environmental Information Network of the Amazon (RAISG) and the Amazonia For Life: Protect 80% by 2025 coalition presents an “x-ray” of the current deterioration of the Amazon, and at the same time a perspective on the opportunities to recover biodiversity in this region, one fo the most important regions in the world. The alliance and alignment between the ancient knowledge of Indigenous peoples and the new research offer a roadmap with various possibilities for governments, experts, civil society and Indigenous peoples living in this immense region to join forces to make the protection of 80% of the Basin by 2025 possible.

  • Carlos Nobre, renowned scientist, one of the most recognized experts for his research on the climate of the Amazon and one of the heads of the Scientific Panel on this basin, will explain the current state of degradation of the Amazon and the risks for this biome if extractive activities are not stopped in the basin.

  • José Gregorio Díaz Mirabal, General Coordinator of COICA, will explain the successful practices carried out by Indigenous peoples to protect the Amazonian regions in which they live.

  • Marlene Quintanilla, Director of Research and Knowledge Management, Friends of Nature Foundation (FAN) will explain the findings of the research showing that the Amazon reached the tipping point and provide alternatives that exist to achieve the recovery of the basin.

  • Mauricio Mirelles, FAO Policy Officer for Indigenous Peoples and Social Inclusion, will speak about the efforts needed to respect, include, and promote the rights of Indigenous peoples and how with this global vision it is possible to stop the further degradation of the Amazon.

  • Alicia Guzmán, moderator, Stand Earth.
