Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report reveals company’s direct emissions have increased 162% since announcing Climate Pledge in 2019

SEATTLE (Traditional Puget Sound Salish and Duwamish Lands) — Last evening, Amazon released its 2024 Sustainability Report that reveals the company’s direct emissions have increased over the past year by 6%. According to the company’s report, this Scope 1 pollution has ballooned 162% since 2019 – the same year the company announced its Climate Pledge.
This stark increase directly contradicts the company’s 2019 Climate Pledge to cut its shipping emissions by 50% and reach net-zero carbon by 2040, while underscoring the urgent need for immediate, measurable action.
“In its latest Sustainability Report, Amazon claims progress while finding its pollution has increased,” said Joshua Archer, Senior Global Corporate Campaigner at Stand.earth. “Despite their commitments and their customers’ wishes, leadership’s failure to reduce absolute air and climate emissions is bad for public health, and a disappointment to the 80 percent of Prime members who want the company to be more ambitious in decarbonizing its operations.”
The report also reveals the following:
- Total emissions grew 6%, due mostly to pollution generated by the company’s data centers and delivery fleet
- Scope 1 fossil fuel use ballooned 7% year-over-year to 14.8 million metric tons CO2, primarily from Amazon’s own transportation and logistics fleet
- Total Scope 3 upstream and downstream transportation emissions jumped 7% year-over-year to 13.34 million metric tons CO2
A Morning Consult national tracking poll of 1,077 Amazon Prime members conducted ahead of this year’s July Prime Day event finds an overwhelming 80% of the company’s loyal customer base wants Amazon to take stronger action to cut emissions from its delivery and transportation operations – and 75% of Prime members say they would accept slower shipping in exchange for reduced emissions, signaling a profound shift in customer priorities. The poll surveyed 1,077 U.S.-based Amazon Prime members from June 27–29, 2025, with a margin of error of ±3%.
