Danielle Smith’s half-backed pipeline proposal faces wall of west coast opposition

OTTAWA | TRADITIONAL, UNCEDED TERRITORY OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHNAABEG PEOPLE – Responding to Alberta Premiere, Danielle Smith’s, plan to propose a new tar sands pipeline to the West Coast of Canada, Stand.earth issued the following statement.

“Nobody wants Danielle Smith’s pipeline. First Nations don’t want it, private investors don’t want it, and Premiere Eby and the people of B.C. don’t want it. Even big oil companies are not willing to invest their own money in this pipe dream. The bottom line is that neither taxpayers nor the climate can afford it,” said Kiki Wood, senior oil and gas campaigner with Stand.earth. “Albertan Premieres have already stolen billions of dollars from taxpayers for failed oil infrastructure, like Rachel Notley’s derailed oil train scheme, and the $1.5 billion Jason Kenney lost on the Keystone XL pipeline.”

“Instead of growing Alberta’s economy a new pipeline will only grow Alberta’s debt and deficit. Nobody who understands the science of climate change, or the future of global markets would think this is a good idea,” said Sven Biggs, Canada oil and gas campaign director with Stand.earth. “Particularly when the $35 billion Trans Mountain Expansion boondoggle is still not operating at full capacity. This is little more than another attempt by Danielle Smith to distract Albertans from her record of scandal, declining public service levels, and growing deficits. Alberta needs a new Premier, not another pipeline.”
