It’s about time the oil and gas is held accountable for the climate emergency

November 4, 2024

Unceded Coast Salish Territories [Vancouver, B.C.] – Upon today’s release of the federal government’s draft regulations to cap greenhouse gas emissions from Canada’s oil and gas sector to 35 per cent below 2019 levels Sven Biggs, Canadian Oil and Gas Programs Director with Stand.earth, said:

“Oil and gas extraction is Canada’s largest source of climate pollution, totaling a third of all our emissions, and it’s long past time that these glutted-wth-cash corporations be required to clean up their acts. The impacts of climate change — unnatural disasters like floods, fires and storms that it intensifies — are already causing massive destruction around the globe. However, in spite of the growing human cost, big oil and their highly-paid lobbyists continue to stand in the way of policies, like the emissions cap, that would move us towards a safer climate. We can not wait any longer, which is why we welcome today’s announcement.”
