Port of Vancouver: bunkering cruise ships with LNG is nothing to be proud of

May 12, 2025

səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) territories (VANCOUVER, B.C.) – Reacting to the news about the first cruise ship fueling up with LNG in at the Port of Vancouver, Anna Barford, Oceans campaigner with Stand.earth, said:

“A lie repeated, is still a lie. LNG, from fracking to burning, emits methane which is 84 times more harmful to the climate than CO2. The Port of Vancouver promoting the fossil fuel industry’s ‘LNG is a bridge fuel’ talking point shows they already know how dangerous gas is but want to surf the fading wake of an unsustainable industry. Instead of adding pollution powered ships to the west coast’s cruise ship superhighway, we need to see investment into renewables — critical for keeping the air in port communities cleaner while encouraging ships to chart a course for the future.”
