Statement by Stand.earth on Charlottesville, VA

We at Stand.earth are deeply saddened by the hatred and intimidation displayed by white supremacists in Charlottesville, VA and in the White House.

The actions of those in Charlottesville terrorized the community, sent a chill through everyone in the country and the world who believe in equality of all people, and led to the murder of anti-racist protester Heather Heyer.

We are also disgusted and appalled by the blatant support and encouragement that these hate groups are receiving from Donald Trump and his Administration.

Heather Heyer’s death follows a long line of murders at the hands of white supremacists. We remember the names Sandra Bland, Philando Castile, Tamir Rice, and the many others whose lives have been cut short. We remember the United States’ long history of government sanctioned racism, and of the individual acts of prejudice, hate and discrimination which continue to plague our country every day and hold us back as a people.

The violence exhibited by these white supremacist hate groups demonstrates that virulent racism is alive and well in this country and is a reminder that every one of us must rededicate ourselves to dismantling the everyday white supremacy that diminishes our collective humanity.

Our hearts and commitment are with those who are speaking out and confronting the structural racism and everyday white supremacy that inhibits the right to thrive of millions of people of
color on a daily basis. If we truly care about freedom and equality, we can’t stand on the sidelines while such blatant acts of hatred and racist violence persist in our country. To be silent at this time is to be complicit. We encourage everyone to speak out and take action to support equality and justice.

Let’s show that hate will only fuel our resilience and resistance.
