Stand.earth Statement on Draft SCOTUS Opinion Overturning Roe v. Wade

May 3, 2022

In response to the draft U.S. Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe vs Wade, Stand.earth Executive Director Todd Paglia said:

“This draft opinion is a red flag. Yes, it is not a decision, but it is extremely troubling for anyone who cares about justice. There’s the deeply disheartening obvious: The majority of people in the United States want people who give birth to have access to safe, legal abortions. Period.

“There’s also the reality that a small group of people, out of step with the majority of Americans, are possibly making a ruling with generational consequences. This is not the America we want. The truth is that the majority also wants action on the climate crisis. We want billionaires to pay their fair share in taxes. We want schools to teach history and we know that hiding from the past is not the way forward. We want a fairer, more just society for all. We want that ‘more perfect union’ that is always worth fighting for.

“But a small minority – literally, given that the conservative wing of the Supreme Court is now fully made up of judges appointed by two presidents who lost the popular vote – continues to block access and action. We’ve seen it with the climate crisis every day, and we’re seeing it now with basic human rights. As has been said many times in the last decade: elections have consequences. Get ready for November 8, 2022.”
