Record breaking freshwater extraction in a time of drought
New data released by the BC Energy Regulator (BCER) shows that, despite the fact that the Peace and Fort Nelson districts in northeastern B.C. are in the grips of a multi-year drought, oil and gas companies have increased the amount of fresh water they withdrew from rivers and lakes in the region, setting a new record over six billion liters of water taken in 2023.
