President Biden: Block all new fossil fuel projects and invest in a clean energy future

Dear President Biden,

In May of 2021 the International Energy Agency laid out in no uncertain terms what the scientific community has been saying for several years: we must “end new oil, gas and coal funding.” [1] Not just that, but the latest science shows that we have more than enough renewable energy potential to power our societies and economies. [2]

As the leader of the country with the largest economy in the world, it is essential the United States lead by example and immediately end all new investment in fossil fuels and the infrastructure that supports their proliferation.

All across the nation – from Los Angeles to Des Moines to New York City to Memphis to Seattle and beyond – local governments are joining the SAFE Cities movement [3] and blocking new fossil fuel projects to protect their residents and address the climate crisis. They’re prioritizing investment in green projects, electrification and initiating a just transition to a clean energy future.

At the same time, people are fighting mega-fossil fuel projects like the Line 3 pipeline in Minnesota, the Jordan Cove LNG terminal in Oregon, the North Brooklyn pipeline in New York, and the Byhalia Connection in Tennessee. National leadership and action to stop these destructive projects is essential.

We are heartened by many of the positive steps you and your administration have taken to curtail fossil fuels usage and address climate change, but there are still many things that need to be done to combat this global crisis.

That’s why we, the undersigned, are calling you to immediately implement the following actions:

  1. Block, cancel, or rescind any and all permits for incomplete fossil fuel exploration and infrastructure. This includes, but is not limited to: pipelines, refineries, oil and gas fields, coal mines, storage terminals, export terminals and any other piece of infrastructure that will expand the footprint of the fossil fuel industry.
  2. Equitably redirect and reallocate any and all money, tax credits, and resources supporting fossil fuel industries to the clean energy sector in order to facilitate a just transition where no worker, family, or community is left behind.
  3. Begin engaging in talks with the international community to help facilitate and draft a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty that would phase out fossil fuels and implement a just transition. [4]

The science and economics could not be clearer. Every new fossil fuel project that moves forward takes one step closer to climate catastrophe. The time is now to end all new fossil fuel exploration and infrastructure expansion projects while simultaneously investing in a clean energy future.

Respectfully,
