Everything You Need to Know About the Proposed Tilbury Expansion

FortisBC wants to put our communities, climate and wildlife at risk so they can super-size an LNG storage tank to be able to fill it up with fracked gas.

What is the Tilbury LNG Phase 2 Expansion?

The Tilbury LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Phase 2 Expansion project would expand FortisBC’s facilities along the Fraser River in Metro Vancouver. A large storage tank and over 100 annual tanker voyages to export LNG via tanker ship are part of the plan to justify fracking. Expanding from the base plant will add a lot of new pollution and risks for the land, water, and the communities around Delta and along the tanker route.

This expansion project has been met with resistance from local communities, experts, and environmentalists since the beginning. The project threatens important salmon habitat and adds polluting ship traffic that makes it harder for endangered orcas to survive. Fortis is planning to add to energy bills so customers cover the cost of the new tank, while also pushing communities toward more fossil fuel use instead of moving to reliable renewables. Expansion would lock in about 1 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year for decades on top of industrial pollution in Delta and the fracking fields.

We can choose a cleaner, more affordable path that protects people, wildlife, and the climate. Learn more about the proposed project, what we’re doing to pressure Fortis BC and the BC government, and what you can do to join the fight.
