In a time where ferries around the world are striving for cleaner practices, BC Ferries faces a critical decision. Despite knowing the importance of cutting emissions, BC Ferries continues to use LNG from fracking and pollute the environment.

Introduction:

Using LNG as a ‘green’ solution is like treating a headache with a hammer– it’s a drastic and harmful measure that completely misses the root of the problem. Just like carbon monoxide in a home, LNG produces no visible smoke, but its impact on the environment is a death sentence.

The Problem:

In an era where the ferries around the world are embracing sustainability, BC Ferries stands at a crossroads. The core issue is clear—despite recognizing the imperative to cut emissions, BC Ferries continues to rely on LNG. Their choice undeniably pollutes and poses serious environmental consequences. LNG— is a fuel falsely touted as “green” or “clean” energy. There are real, immediate dangers posed by the actual pollution. And none of those are helped by deceiving ferry users with this false advertising. The truth remains obscured, leading people to unknowingly contribute to pollution while utilizing these ferries on a daily basis. LNG lacks visible smoke, but worsens the public health and environmental crises.

Tied to Fracking:

BC Ferries relies on LNG sourced from fracking – a controversial method known for its impact on drinking water and communities. There is no way to frack without poisoning huge amounts of water, and there is no way to clean up or dispose of the wastewater from fracking. This connection just adds more pollution to BC Ferries’ “green” approach, making it a significant problem that needs attention.

The Rest of the World is Moving On:

The world is changing rapidly. Globally, ferry operators are embracing clean electric energy for a hopeful future, BC Ferries finds itself stranded in the past. Meanwhile Washington State Ferries are going for an emission-free fleet by 2050 through electrification. BC Ferries, though making strides with diesel-hybrid electric vessels, remains stuck using outdated practices and false solutions. Right now, there isn’t enough essential infrastructure for charging, but other world governments are fixing this infrastructure problem. Why is Canada taking so long? Using LNG leaves BC Ferries marooned in a bygone era. Unless Canada and BC Ferries fully embrace the shift towards electrification seen worldwide, they will continue to be part of the problem.

You Can Make a Difference Right Now:

We cannot allow the fossil fuel industry to get away with branding LNG as a safe fuel. Demand renewable, clean energy sources for ships. We have to stop investing in LNG as a solution and the BC Ferries, governments, and other industries need to hear from you.
